Half-Dragons

Step aside, dragonborn. Half-dragon human is here

Would you believe we can actually choose to be half-dragon as almost any race in 5e?

Half Dragons are kind of a forgotton part of dnd 5e, templates in general are. Half-dragon templates in particular though are useful to us as a player. There’s a particular wording to the half-dragon template here:

“A beast, Humanoid, giant, or Monstrosity can become a half-dragon. It keeps its Statistics, except as follow… “

Pay attention to the fact that any of the listed creatures ‘can become a half-dragon’. Not, could have been made or could be forced into. The above creature types, can simply choose to be better. This includes us as players except for the two fey typed playable races. I reccomend green unless we have a compelling reason to use a different one, as poison resist isn’t covered by absorb elements. Or we can simply be all half-dragons at once, as nothing in the stat block stops us from this.

We also gain blindsight out to 10ft and darkvision to 60ft, which can be very helpful, especially in obscurement

The half-dragon gains Resistance to a type of damage based on its color. This means we can be resistant to all the chromatic damage types if we are all 5 dragon types, which, RAW, why wouldn’t we?

The funniest tech for this is that we can conjure a large number of flying snakes, who then simply choose to be better at being snakes, earn breath weapons, and deal massive amounts of damage as a result. Red dragon wyrmling breaths do 7d6 a piece in a 15ft cone, and 8 of them is 42d6 damage. We can also change up the breath weapons depending on what the enemies resist. Finally, they’re now harder to simply AOE out of existence, as all the popular AOE’s are of an elemental type.
